Amalfi how to get and what to do

The enchanting, irresistible, and authentic Amalfi is the main hub of the coast that bears its name. Concentrated on two main streets, it offers a multitude of activities for those looking to explore. In a previous article, I explained why Amalfi is so famous. In this one, I will answer the most frequently asked questions when planning a trip to Amalfi: how to get there and what to do once you arrive? Just imagining the breathtaking views, vibrant colors, and authentic flavors that await you makes your heart beat faster!

How to get to Amalfi

When it comes to reaching Amalfi, the best way to immerse yourself in the coastal charm is by taking a ferry, especially during its operational months from March/April to October. Ferries connect Amalfi with three key cities: Naples, Salerno, and Sorrento. To reach these embarkation points, I recommend taking a train from the nearest airports.

To move instead towards the other countries of the Amalfi Coast that reach the sea, I always recommend taking the ferry during the summer season. For the inland countries such as Tramonti, Ravello, Scala, and all the small hamlets nestled in the Lattari Mountains, I always suggest renting a scooter if you are skilled at driving or taking buses (only if necessary) and private transfers in the evening. I have delved deeper into this topic in “How to travel the Amalfi Coast,” so if you haven’t already, give it a read before you depart!

From Naples

Naples International Airport is well-connected to the Amalfi Coast. There are buses that frequently connect the airport to the train station in Piazza Garibaldi or the port. You can choose to take the train to Salerno and then the ferry from there, or you can arrive at the port and catch a ferry to Amalfi. Enjoy a scenic voyage along the azure waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

From Salerno

If you arrive at Salerno station, it is very easy to reach the port, just cross the main street and head towards the sea. Ferries provide a picturesque journey to Amalfi, offering stunning views of the rugged coastline.

Taking the bus is like embarking on an economic adventure! Brace yourself for an hour-long rollercoaster ride (traffic permitting) on a road that loves its curves. Get ready for some twists and turns, both literally and figuratively! 😄🚌

From Sorrento

Sorrento is another fantastic starting point for your Amalfi adventure. Take a train from Naples International Airport to Sorrento, and then board a ferry to Amalfi. Sorrento is known for its stunning vistas, and this ferry ride is no exception.

How to get and what to do in Amalfi can be a confusing choice, however, what I can assure you is that the journey promises to be a scenic adventure filled with captivating coastal views.

Where to sleep in Amalfi

In Amalfi, there are several accommodation options to choose from, ranging from luxurious coastal resorts to cozy bed and breakfasts. Your choice will depend on your budget and preferences. Here are some common options:

Luxury Hotels

If you’re looking for a luxury stay, Amalfi offers a range of five-star hotels with exceptional services and amenities. Many of these properties provide spectacular sea views and features like spas, gourmet restaurants, and swimming pools.

Hotel Santa Caterina Amalfi: emblem of hospitality on the Amalfi Coast and a reference point for those in search of excellence.

Hotels and Bed and Breakfasts (B&Bs)

You’ll find numerous hotels and bed and breakfasts offering a range of price options. These accommodations can vary from rustic to modern and are often run by local families who provide warm and authentic hospitality.

Perfectly located il Gelsomino is at 10 min walking from the main square in the quiet residential area of amalfi. Away from the noisy center. Buses and ferry stop are just right next door, like most of the outdoor activities

Vacation Rentals

If you desire more space and the ability to cook, consider renting a vacation home or apartment. This option is great for families or groups of friends. I suggest you Boungaville Holiday House Amalfi.

Regardless of the option you choose, be sure to book in advance, especially during the tourist season, as Amalfi is a highly popular destination. Additionally, check the location of your accommodation to ensure you’re conveniently situated for exploring the city and the surrounding attractions.

Most famous restaurants

Amalfi is known for its delicious cuisine, and there are several famous restaurants that have earned recognition for their culinary excellence and stunning locations. While popularity can vary over time, here are a few renowned restaurants in Amalfi that have traditionally been well-regarded:

Ristorante Marina Grande: Located in the heart of Amalfi, this restaurant offers a fantastic view of the Amalfi Coast and the sea. It’s known for its fresh seafood and traditional Italian dishes.

La Caravella: This elegant michelin-star restaurant in a historic 13th-century building is famous for its seafood and traditional Amalfi Coast recipes. It’s often praised for its romantic atmosphere.

Pizzeria Donna Stella: In my opinion the best pizzeria in Amalfi. A restaurant run by two sisters who are always smiling, you will be thrilled to eat simple typical Amalfi dishes under a terrace covered with lemon trees.

Taverna del Duca: is the perfect place where you can enjoy the taste of quality at economical prices, where you can have lunch after a long excursion among the coastal towns and where you can dine by candlelight in front of the delicious dishes of Amalfi gastronomy.

Lido Azzurro: Is a privileged terrace from which to fully enjoy the exclusive natural beauty of the Amalfi Coast and, at the same time, savor the typical dishes of the local tradition, rediscovering in each dish the scents, colors, sensations and emotions of this enchanting land with an illustrious past.

Terrazza Duomo: Authentic cuisine that enhances local products and seeks a balance between creativity and tradition. Framed by breathtaking views.

Please note that the popularity of restaurants can change over time, and it’s a good idea to check recent reviews and make reservations in advance, especially during the tourist season, to secure a table at these renowned dining establishments.

Nightlife

Amalfi’s nightlife offers a unique blend of coastal charm and vibrant energy. While it may not be as renowned for its nightlife as some larger Italian cities, it has its own special allure. As the sun sets over the Mediterranean, the town comes alive with the glow of lantern-lit streets and the sounds of laughter echoing from cozy bars and cafes. You can enjoy a leisurely evening sipping on limoncello or local wines at seaside bars, often accompanied by live music. There are also some trendy cocktail lounges and beach clubs that transform into lively spots after dark, perfect for dancing the night away under the stars. Whether you prefer a romantic moonlit stroll along the seafront or the excitement of a bustling piazza, Amalfi offers a delightful taste of Italian nightlife against the backdrop of its breathtaking coastal beauty.

I leave you below some suggestions of the most popular places :

Masanielo Art Cafè, Sea Waves Bar (Hotel la Bussola), Pasticceria francese, Pasticceria Pansa e Bistrò F.lli Pansa

Beaches

Amalfi Beach: Relax and unwind on the town’s inviting pebble beach. Enjoy a day of sunbathing, swimming in crystal-clear waters, or indulging in local seafood at beachfront restaurants.

Spiaggia di Marina Grande

Fully equipped and with many bathing establishments, although it is a fairly large beach, if you do not arrive early you risk not finding a place. The convenient location, easy access and the presence of the pier from where excursions depart make it always crowded.

Great for families with children and those who like to take walks but not recommended for those not looking for hustle and bustle and social life.

Getting there: the beach is located just off the downtown waterfront and is accessible from anywhere in the city within minutes. Hours: always accessible. Ticket cost: free

Duoglio Beach

Duoglio beach is located one kilometer after Amalfi, coming from Vietri sul Mare, and can be reached by walking up a long flight of more than four hundred steps, which starts from the Amalfi State Road, or by sea. A couple of bathing establishments and a restaurant can be found on the beach. Keep in mind that because of the cliffs, the sun goes out at 4:30 pm.

How to get there: from the north towards Amalfi by taking the S.S. 163 about 1 km away. You can also arrive by ferry or by booking from Lido degli Artisti, which will pick you up in Amalfi by boat.

I have mentioned the two closest and most famous beaches in Amalfi. In high season I always recommend avoiding beaches accessible from the road and instead recommend private coves such as Duoglio. Amalfi is an excellent port well connected with all taxiboat services.
